This book introduces a new teaching approach which is called “cognitive functional approach”. Combining the theories of transformational generative linguistics and the functional linguistics, this approach suggest that teachers provide enough and standard language materials, and the students conclude the grammar rules on their own; and to choose appropriate sentence patterns in the communication context. The book gives detailed introduction to the application of this approach to teaching of Chinese phonetics, Chinese characters, words, grammar and discourse.
