This book introduces a new teaching approach which is called “cognitive functional approach”. Combining the theories of transformational generative linguistics and the functional linguistics, this approach suggest that teachers provide enough and standard language materials, and the students conclude the grammar rules on their own; and to choose appropriate sentence patterns in the communication context. The book gives detailed introduction to the application of this approach to teaching of Chinese phonetics, Chinese characters, words, grammar and discourse. It is both theoretical and applicable, with simple language, rich examples and incisive analysis. The book provides necessary introduction of background research and detailed teaching guidance for the teachers who are interested in this approach; and also valuable reference for the other teachers and researchers in teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
