Application: Intermediate Chinese Listening and Speaking selects 32 interesting articles on a variety of topics and divides them into 8 units. It corresponds with Application: Intermediate Chinese Reading and Writing and plays a complementary role. In general, the vocabulary and grammar do not go beyond the "Reading and Writing" book, and there are notes on the new words and language points if any. In this way, learners may focus on listening and speaking practice without much burden of learning new vocabulary. In each lesson, there is a topic to lead in, and listening exercises to wind up. The specific teaching advice is as follows:
(1) The class should begin with warm-up activity and carry on with the main topic.
(2) Both listening and speaking are the focus of this course. The teacher may allocate time for both aspects and decide the sequence flexibly according to student levels. Each Lesson involves speaking and listening sections, with the first one consisting of three dialogues and a short article. The listening practice may be arranged before, during or after the speaking section.
(3) It is suggested not to spend much time on vocabulary and grammar as they are mostly covered in the "Reading and Writing" book.
(4) In each Lesson, there are important language functions that should be fully explained and practiced with examples and exercises.
(5) There are two parts of exercises in each lesson: the first part is put after each dialogue, and the second one after the whole text.
The design of the first part of exercises employs a "bottom-up" principle, that is, from words to sentences and then to paragraphs; from comprehension to application; from mechanical drills to creative tasks; from text-related questions to "real-world" topics; from "retell" exercises to natural dialogues. All in all, the ultimate aim is to develop students' communication skills with the help of what is learned in class.
The second part of exercises concerns language functions and involves communicative tasks. The teacher may leave these tasks to students as homework and allocate some time for their report in the next class.
(6) This book has a vocabulary list attached at the end, in alphabetical order. It includes all the new words appeared in this book and in the corresponding "Reading and Writing" one.
